T Minus 44 and counting
| On January 27th, 2010, Apple rocked my world with the announcement of the iPad! And of course, there were those of you that said nay and grumbled off to poo poo the whole concept. After all, if you have a Mobile Phone and a Laptop Computer, why on earth would you need the iPad? Well, unless you live under a rock or have been away for a long time, perhaps basking in the sun on some beautiful beach in the south pacific where the ability to have dial-up doesn't even exist, then your pretty aware that there's a change a foot. It's called "The Cloud." Isn't that cool? "The Cloud." Some of you are already using Cloud based services like LaLa or Pandora or Google Documents. "The Cloud," services and storage based on the Internet will change the way we all work and play. Not too dissimilar to what happened with the iPhone. No longer will you be tied down to a single desktop or laptop computer. No longer will you say, "Oh I have that information but it's on my computer at work." The iPad gives you access to your information wherever you go and it's not bad as an ebook reader either. In fact, I can see lots of Colleges and University's changing over to the "green" e-format and requiring every student to have an iPad. I can't wait for the release of the iPad. I can't wait for this next evolution. Sign me up. I'm in technology heaven! |

Definitely see major educational uses. Besides the 'green' effect, not having kids walk around with heavy back packs will also be major.
People who state not enough computer horsepower are losing the point. This is a middle ground convenience device. When home, phone is sometimes too small and laptop or desktop too much! Apple just created a new tier! Count me in.

1. I think it will be most interesting to see precisely who buys this product. I'm sure there is a market of buyers, but they may not be so easily defined.
2. Also, in the past 15 years, Apple's business model has been to make dramatic improvements to existing products in user interface and portability. The iPod replaced the Walkman, and the iPhone in many ways replaced Blackberry's and Palm devices. But the iPad is a new product category of its own. Apple may have a tough time selling through even their reduced stock.
3. I think Apple should spend more time discussing the exact benefits of the product. They seem to expect users to just "get it", when perception may be that this is not needed in addition to other devices.

Apple announced today that the iPad will be available on April 3rd.

I am going to wait for the next generation and with the iphone there will be other and better ipad style pads!

iPad Update:
Now that we are six months down the road since the iPad has launched. We can truly see what a game changer Apple has created. With sales over 4.2 million units and capturing the lion’s share of the netbook market, there is no doubt that the iPad is a home run. The iPad may even be the savior of the print media industry! However, I still miss the lack of flash and keyboard editing capabilities, but I know the product will evolve. HTML5 and H.264 video will become the Web standard and I’ll look back fondly and grumble about these days much the same way I did in remembering 1984 when my cell phone was bolted in the car, cost $4,000 to purchase and $0.75 a minute to use, but, oh the technology. Sweet, sweet technology...
